“If you don’t fly, you’ll miss a lot of experiences in your life.”*
BIG WINGS was created to remind you of your true nature, of your humanity, capacity and resilience. BIG WINGS is about living, connecting, finding, and feeling ALIVE.
For me, BIG WINGS has very real roots in both a family tragedy and an image that I carried with me throughout my life. An image of myself, a female, with wings. Big wings, way too big for many of the spaces I inhabited: schools, religious institutions and places of employment. Although most teachers responded warmly to me and I made friends easily, I rarely felt that I “fit.” Somehow, I took up too much space. I was often too intense, too expressive, too active, or too honest. Being a good kid, I was often reigning myself in to fit, crunching my big wings down in order to slip into what felt like some very tight spaces. Even when my wings were pulled-in tight, one wing or the other was periodically making a mess of things, blocking someone’s view or brushing against someone’s shoulder, disrupting someone for some reason. It was exhausting and many times heartbreaking.
I eventually found places where I could be myself, truly myself, be embraced, cherished and encouraged to spread my wings to the limit. This changed everything. Unbound flight was finally possible.
My dream is for BIG WINGS to provide a spacious, inviting, warm, pleasurable place for you to not only fit, but feel at home – a place where you’ll find yourself and your “flock.” A place where we can fly together beyond uncertainty to strength, beyond pain to possibility, beyond impasse to creativity, beyond the ordinary to the exceptional.
*These words were my grandmother’s mantra reminding her remaining children to seize life’s adventure, even after losing her vibrant, brilliant, athletic 22 year-old daughter, Halcyon, to a plane crash. BIG WINGS continues Halcyon’s legacy.
